South Beach and Heywood-Wakefield

South Beach Furniture Company, founded in 1984 and located in the Art Deco district of South Beach in Miami, Florida, was in the business of finding or restoring pieces of vintage furniture for its customers. The owner of the South Beach Furniture Company noticed that every time he acquired light-colored furniture, mid-century solid wood, he could not store it in the store. As supplies of vintage furniture sources began to run out or became cost prohibitive, he saw a marketing niche that a furniture manufacturing company could fill. When he discovered that the company Heywood-Wakefield, which manufactured the furniture that his clients were looking for, was bankrupt, he bought the company with his partner.

Eagle Hallmark

Most of the furniture manufactured by the company included its distinctive badge: a black eagle with wings spread and its beak turned to the left with its name stamped on the eagle. Look for the distinctive seal on the backs of the furniture, support bars or on the back of the tables. When you hunt hard enough, you can still find some of the first original American furniture, wicker, rattan and Colonial of the company for sale in thrift stores or online auction sites, but most of the used furniture of Heywood-Wakefield are composed of Modern Line of the Century .

Modern mid-century

The furniture features include all the features found in mid-century modern styles: slim and narrow legs at low angle tables, chairs and sofas, along with organic curves and geometric shapes . The company manufactures cocktail tables, furniture for the dining room and bedroom, mirrors, bar stools and more. For its upholstered furniture, the company uses high quality woven fabrics manufactured in Europe and the United States that resonate with the patterns and fabrics that the original company used during the 1940s and 1950s.

Solid yellow birch wood

The Heywood-Wakefield company continues to manufacture its mid-century modern furniture with northern yellow birch wood, but nowadays selects higher quality woods than those originally used by the company. The furniture that it currently makes requires a lighter colored finish, so the selection of grains is an important part of the process, right at the sawmill. The furniture is 100 percent American made from sustainable wood harvested from New Hampshire farms. These farms plant two trees for each harvested tree.
